A popular starting point for tours, and the largest settlement in the valley is Cavtat, only 30 minutes drive from Dubrovnik, seaside resort packed with historical attractions. The beautiful waterfront with palm trees is full of yachts in the summer time. The extremely high-quality gastronomic offer is one of the reasons why many people coming to Cavtat. The House of Vlaho Bukovac is a museum (and, in fact, his actual home at one point) dedicated to this Croatian painter who was born in Cavtat in 1855. The Racic Mausoleum was built in 1921 to a design by famed Croatian sculptor and architect Ivan Mestrovic using stone from the island of Brac. The Racic family were a well known ship-owning family from the town.
The road takes us further into the Konavale valley.
Konavle was bought by the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1419 and since then Konavle has been feeding the Republic. The first stop on our way through Konavle is the viewpoint from where you can see the whole of Konavle and Cavtat.
Sokol tower is located in Gornji Konavle. There are many legends that accompany Dubrovnik and its surroundings. Thus, various stories from ancient times are related to the unique Sokol tower. The Sokol Tower is located on a high, inaccessible rock above the Dunave in Konavle, close to Dubrovnik, and has dominated the Konavle walley since Illyrian times with its imposing size. Its shape is adapted to the natural rock on which it was created, and the color of the stone blends in with the natural environment.
What kind of visit to Konavle would it be without tasting the white wine known on the table of the English royal family. We end the trip with lunch at Konavoski dvori, a wonderful restaurant on the river Ljuta.
